Malcolm Kohll is a South African screenwriter, producer, and film educator with an international career in television and feature films. After training as a journalist and screenwriter, he joined Focus Films in London — the company founded by David Pupkewitz — where he helped establish the development department and went on to co-produce eight theatrical feature films, including The 51st State, which grossed over US$90 million worldwide.
His writing and production credits include Triomf, Chemical Wedding, The Bone Snatcher, Julia’s Ghost, Secret Society, and Master Harold…and the Boys. Earlier projects include Diary of a Sane Man (Channel 4), The Fourth Reich, and three episodes of Doctor Who for the BBC. He also worked under Verity Lambert as a development assistant at Thorn/EMI and was a script reader for Goldcrest Films.
Since returning to South Africa, Malcolm has led film education programmes at AFDA Cape Town, SAE, and CityVarsity, where he served as Head of Screenwriting until its closure. He also co-founded the Non-Profit Documentary Institute of South Africa (DOCi) with US producer Michael S. Murphey to train previously disadvantaged youth in documentary filmmaking.
His current development slate includes Tadpole, Shot in the Dark, The House on the Hill, Woodstock Confidential, The Stop Over, and Robbers’ Paradox, with collaborations spanning the UK, Canada, and South Africa. He continues to work actively as a producer and screenwriter.
