Moray Rhoda is a respected figure in the South African independent and underground comic scene. He was a founding member of the Igubu Comic Book Collective and the driving force behind Insurrection Studios in the early 2000s. He is best known for co-producing the Velocity Graphic Novel Anthology with Neville Howard, showcasing artists from South Africa, Australia, and beyond.
In 2006, Moray co-organised the Comics Brew Festival with Grant Muller, a sponsored event featuring international guests, exhibitions, and workshops. As part of this initiative, he produced The Outline Comic and hosted a launch and exhibition at Alliance Française in Cape Town. At the same time, he worked for Media24, managing the art studio of Beat Comics and art-directing titles such as Mzansi Beats, Unicity, and Kasiwash.
Moray contributed to the local comic publications SECTOR, Lil5, and the Velocity Graphic Anthology, and helped host South Africa’s first comic panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2013, followed by a second in 2014. He also played a key role in organising Open Book Comics Fest (2012–2017) and curated local comic showcases for Design Indaba in 2015.
He has presented at FanCon (2017–2018) and served as a speaker and interviewer at Comic Con Johannesburg and Comic Con Cape Town in 2023 and 2024. From 2016 to 2024, he lectured in the Multimedia and Animation department at CityVarsity Cape Town. Moray holds qualifications in Graphic Design and Visual Communication Design, and has worked in advertising, media, and publishing for over 20 years. He currently works as a freelance illustrator and editorial cartoonist.
